Abstract

This paper, entitled “Culture and Democracy: The Political Resonances of Eurovision”, presents an analysis
of the controversies found in the Eurovision Song Contest, from a political point of view. The international
aspect of this festival offers us a case in point for the study of international relations. This analysis aims to
find out whether, among the considerations for which Eurovision voters express their preferences, there are
certain political resonances - while also presenting the bias the participating countries show towards each
other through voting. At the same time, it addresses how conflicts and relations on the international stage
are transposed into disputes taking place between participating countries through the content of the songs
used to represent them in the competition and beyond. Thus, this paper aims to demonstrate the existence
of political resonances in the competition, despite the non-political nature of this event.
