Abstract

This research proposes an analysis on the implications of the presidential elections in the United States of America
on the international stage and implicitly on the European Union. Two electoral successes are being studied here, that
of Donald Trump and Joe Biden. The two administrations present in the two mandates are being researched, the
focal point being mainly their foreign policy and its impact on transatlantic relations. For a better understanding
of this democratic phenomenon, we need to take a closer look at the causes that led to these presidential victories,
respectively the internal situation of the American society and the electoral campaigns undertaken. The two electoral
races analyzed are characterized by a strong ideological contrast, which is reflected in the foreign policy promoted
by the United States of America in that period of time, due to the incorporation of the concepts endorsed by the
triumphant candidate within the American administration. Thus, it is noted that the policy promoted by Donald
Trump on the international stage is one which is clearly in conflict with that of the European Union, it constitutes an
ideological distancing in the transatlantic relations, while the policy promoted by Joe Boden wants a synchronized,
active and unitary Western ideology between the two parts. At the end of the paper, it is remarked that the two
presidential elections are representative for the future of transatlantic relations, and potential perspectives on the
evolution of these interactions are presented.
